EDCI 3230 From Ferris Bueller to Freedom Writers: Images of Education in Film

Description

This course uses films and research to analyze educational issues of historic and contemporary significance. Students will discuss how films have shaped society’s perceptions of students, schools, and teachers and how these films either challenge or perpetuate stereotypes. Films will be covered thematically, with viewing both in and out of class, and a significant portion of the class will be focused on images of urban education. Major topics within each theme include cultural diversity, curriculum, school violence, education in out-of-school contexts, and educational policy. Students will be responsible for film reviews, debates, group discussion, weekly journal reflections, and a final paper.
