Description | This course will be centered on the American College of Sports Medicine initiative âExercise is Medicineâ. Delivered in seminar-style format, we will discuss the development and symptoms of various disease states or chronic conditions (HIV, congestive heart failure, diabetes, muscular dystrophy, cancer, inactivity, obesity, etc.). While traditional medical treatments will be considered, the true focus of this course will be to explore the impact that exercise, as well as physical inactivity, have on each condition. Students will read current literature, and deliver presentations to the class. |

Description | This course was created to provide structure and professional development for students completing their Ph.D. in Kinesiology with a concentration in Physical Education Teacher Education with a cognate in Adapted Physical Education within the Department of Kinesiology and Health. This course is designed to provide intensive experiences for students to work with individuals with disabilities in sport, physical education and recreation settings under the supervision of a faculty member. The goal of the course is to give doctoral students an opportunity to continue to develop practical skills working with individuals with disabilities. In so doing students bring real life experiences with them to their college classroom and will continue to be connected to the issues professionals face while working with students with disabilities in sport and educational settings. This understanding will lead to better collaborations between schools, not-for-profit agencies and institutions of higher education and increased advocacy for students with disabilities at all levels.
